More than a dozen Transportation Security Administration (TSA) air marshals reportedly intend to refuse deployment to the U.S.-Mexico border by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). A lawyer representing the group wrote to the DHS on November 4 alleging that the deployment was illegal because it was outside the scope of the air marshal’s job description.
The DHS had originally sought volunteers from TSA’s Air Marshal Service to assist at the southwest border, but fewer than 150 signed up by October. To make up for the lack of volunteers, some air marshals were formally reassigned to the location. TSA air marshals typically fly on domestic airlines to guard against potential security threats on board.
